Ever feel like gardening or learning the ropes of how to grow in the harsh conditions of Oswego?

Spring is around the corner and Greenspace Home and Garden store located in the heart of Oswego can help get you started. Erica Holman runs and operates the establishment, located at 48 W. Bridge St., since the opening of the business on May 11, 2012.

Holman grew up with a background in southern, gardening lifestyle and decided to bring this knowledge with her when she moved to Oswego from the Ithaca area with her husband, Mike Holman. While she maintains the gardening business, her husband is the head coach of the men and women's swimming and diving team at Oswego University.

"When we moved here, I decided it was a great time to finally start up my gardening business in the middle of Oswego," Holman said.

The newly, refurbished store offers a wide variety of gardening and home goods. Pots, Burgon and Bell gardening tools, candles, fresh plants, and garden containers are sold at Greenspace. The vertical garden containers are ideal for anyone looking to expand their garden size, according to Holman. Various seeds include organic and heirloom vegetable, uncommon ornamental and organic herb plants.

The store also has work from local artisans and carry New York State edible, farm products. Other items include home-goods inspired by nature and Beekman 1802 (Sharon Springs, N.Y.) bath and body products.
"I've taken a wide variety of gardening classes specifically at Cornell Cooperative Extension. The goal right now, is to hopefully expand and give presentations during the opening of the Farmer's Market," Holman said.

The Farmer's Market begins May 24 and runs through October. The market is held every Thursday on West First Street and carries a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and more.

Holman, who is expecting her first child in April, has set back her plans for presenting at The Oswego Public Library regarding family gardening and tips on March 23, 2013 due to requested bed rest. However, she is still interested in donating seeds and loaning tools and supplies for demonstrations as requested. Contact her for more information.

Greenspace Home and Garden is open from 12-6 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday until spring when it will close an hour later at 7 p.m.; it is closed Sunday and Monday. The store is also available for private hours upon request.

For more information, contact Holman at 315-580-2740; visit the store's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/greenspaceoswego; or go to the Greenspace Website at http://greenspaceoswego.com/.
